La Ruca
From A Vegan Guide To Bristol 2006
The Gloucester Road is one of the most interesting streets in Bristol, and indeed the whole of the UK. It is a primarily a fantastic collection of shops, cafes and bars, and boasts a vibrant and lively atmosphere unmatched by the modern day shopping mall. Real character, charm and diversity abound, with many many interesting places to visit, mostly with excellent value attached. And one such jewel on the Gloccy is La Ruca.
As soon as you enter the downstairs delicatessen, you know you are in for a treat. Loads of excellent vegan goodies to be found on the well stocked shelves of the downstairs shop, including a lush selection of olives, falafels, snacks and savouries, as well as healthfoods and groceries, and all at excellent prices. And then upstairs, a really beautiful café area with some superb food available, much of it vegan.
The menu carries a strong South American slant, and includes daily specials, most of which are vegan, and favourites including White Bean and Sweet Potato Tacos, Falafel, Chimichangas (their most popular dish), Tortillas and Enchiladas. There is also a varied selection of homemade cakes, including dairy wheat and sugar free versions too, and fresh smoothies, juices and of course teas and coffees.
Although not exclusively vegan, La Ruca is definitely vegan friendly, and great value for money too. ‘We aim to provide healthy nourishing meals using our own organic products at a minimal cost.’ Says Mrs Alvarez, who along with her husband Alfonso, runs La Ruca. We opened in 1997, after coming from Chile to the UK twenty years before, and we have always catered for vegans. Recently we have seen an increase in demand for vegan food and also other special diets, so we have many varied and interesting dishes that are suitable for all tastes.
The atmosphere in La Ruca is further enhanced by the wicked tunes and décor, both leaning towards their South American roots. There are regular exhibitions here too, often with South American links, and the whole place is available for hire for private parties too. They also provide a vegetarian take-away buffet service too, and basically will be happy to help with any request they receive.
The café is a brilliant place to stop and eat when visiting the Gloccy, and the passion, warmth and humour of the owners is reflected throughout this delightful establishment. We recommend a visit to this place very highly.
