From A Vegan Guide To Bristol 2004.

Viva! campaigns to end animal suffering!

With a staggering one billion farmed animals slaughtered in the UK every year - more than 45 billion across the globe - the extent of the misery is vast. Most of these animals spend their short lives imprisoned in the squalor of factory farms. By secretly filming the reality and using the footage in high profile campaigns, we strip away the excuses of those who try to justify the cruelty.

We have exposed the way ducks are farmed in sheds in their millions without water in which to swim, shown the pain and degradation that pigs endure; we've cut out the export of "meat" horses from Poland to the EU by tens of thousands; we've almost ended the sale of meat from wildlife in British supermarkets; exposed the "unbootiful" side of turkey farming; helped to end barbaric home slaughter - and exposed the sham that mainstream slaughter is humane.

We're campaigning to stop female pigs from being imprisoned in tiny crates to give birth, working to ban ritual religious slaughter and fighting against the use of kangeroo skin by sports manufacturers such as Adidas. Already, we've brought about change and have won several awards as a result. There will be other campaigns and other victories.

As Viva! approaches its 10th anniversary, we're even more committed to uncovering the deceit of the meat and dairy industry but on top of this, for 2004 we're planning a whole year of vibrant, engaging "Go Veggie" events, culminating in a massive national celebration.

Since moving to bigger offices in Bristol, we've been able to increase our work for animals and use our resources even more effectively. With full - colour campaign materials, receipe leaflets, guides on everything veggie and our regular magazine, Viva! LIFE, we're spreading the message. More and more people are joining the fight back against cruelty, impoverishment and environmental collapse.
