From A Vegan Guide To Bristol 2006

Just up from underneath the Arches at the bottom of Gloucester Road where it turns into Cheltenham Road is one of Bristol’s best restaurants, Plantation. A Caribbean restaurant opened 2 years ago, the place is deceptively large, with seating for 150, and a large open plan kitchen, buffet area, bar and upstairs, coupled with some very colourful décor, gives the place an expansive feel.

For veggies and vegans, the menu is nothing short of ecstatic, and that is largely down to the influence of the Rastafarian culture on Bev, the owner. ‘Rastafarians eat ital food and are often strict vegans. It’s a way of life for them and is deeply spiritual’, says Bev, who although Caribbean by descent, is Bristol born and bred. ‘I found it a real challenge to create vegan food with a traditional Caribbean influence, but I think I have achieved that.’

Indeed she has. Bev’s beautiful food is very highly spoken of by a number of vegan diners in the area, and with her respect for the vegan lifestyle, the food is always clean as well as tasty. With several vegan starters, a dozen vegan side dishes and other main dishes such as Vegetable Rundown ( a gorgeous concoction of fried mixed veg cooked in coconut milk) and Escoveitched Aubergine, it is easy to see why more and more veggie vegans are finding their way to Plantation. Couple the excellent food with the friendly and lively family atmosphere (Bev’s mum is often to be found in the kitchen lending her expertise to the occasion) and you have the makings of an extremely enjoyable night out.

Planatation is highly recommended for diners of every dietary persuasion, and will be at the Bristol Vegan Fayre World Cup Food Fest on June 10th representing Jamaica if you fancy sampling some of their delightful food.
