It's that time of year again! Reserve the date in your diary... it's the 2009 Greyhound Gathering & Dog's picnic. This event is held every year as part of the International Greyhound Remembrance weekend in memory of all the greyhounds who have suffered & died because of the racing industry. We have stalls from Greyhound Action, South West Sighthounds, Classy Collars, Bristol DAWG & other local charities (tbc), a cake stall, amazing raffle, & refreshments (please bring a picnic though!). There is also a completely fenced in walled garden next to the picnic area where dogs will be able to have some safe off lead exercise. It is an old victorian outdoor swimming pool which is now a wildlife area & garden with a small pond. Obviously the whole of Eastville park is there for dogs which are good off lead BUT this walled garden will be great for dogs who dont have great recall to have some fun. Please spread the word & give the flyers & posters attached to you local vets to display and to fellow dog people!! All dogs are welcome - you don't have to bring a greyhound!! There is plenty of space for everyone to spread out & trees for people to picnic & rest under. If the weather is hot, we will have paddling pools & sponges for the dogs to cool off! Legal Liberation of 13,500 chickens
In 2005 Brighton Animal Action (BAA) legally liberated 4000 chickens in 2 days from a free range farm. They were given permission by the farmer as the chickens have reached the end of their 72 week egg laying productivity.
In April 2007 the 72 weeks will be up again and Brighton Animal Action have the opportunity to do this again and this time are aiming to save all 13,500. We have 6 days to do this in.
At the end of day 6 the slaughter vans will be waiting and will take any chickens we can’t save. With your help the slaughter vans will leave empty.
How you can help:
We need people to get in touch and pledge a home for some of the hens, whether it is 5 or 500 it will make a difference.
We need animal sanctuaries or people with large barns in the midlands and in the north where we can take several hundred birds for a few days to recuperate before they travel further to their new lives.
We desperately need crates, cardboard boxes or pet carriers.
Drivers and large vehicles to take chickens from the meeting point to their new homes.
We will need a vet to be on site as even though these chickens are free range they will be in a shed for over a week and some will sustain injuries.
If anyone is able to help build hen houses for sanctuaries or people with land please contact Brighton Animal Action for more information.

What are the chances of cows getting voting rights in parliament?
Animals Count will be the first UK party ever to put animals at the top of the political agenda. It will encourage other political parties to raise the bar as long as they fail to protect the weaker individuals of our society.
Public support for animal welfare is growing fast in Britain. Over 3 million people support animal charities and donations total 500 million pounds. Due to public pressure fox hunting, fur farming and testing on animals for cosmetics have already been banned in the UK. This was followed by the enforcement of the new UK and Scottish Animal Welfare Act in November 2006. The Acts include a statutory duty to care for animals, higher penalties for animal abuse and grants extended power to inspectors to seize animals that are suffering or in danger of suffering (preventive action).
The new Animal Welfare Act is a step in the right direction; however, millions of animals continue to be exploited every day for food, consumer products, so-called ‘sports’ or other forms of entertainment, and as models for human disease. They suffer throughout their lives crammed in cages without space to perform normal behaviours, become distressed during transport and are sometimes cruelly killed.
Animals Count intends to field candidates for the 3rd May 2007 Welsh Assembly elections, targeting those seats (20) that are chosen by proportional representation rather than via the ‘first past the post system’.
